The Story

The Artisan

Ángel Ortiz

Ángel Ortiz Gabriel, from Tonalá, Jalisco, is one of Mexico’s most celebrated ceramic artists. Trained by his grandparents and later mentored by Jorge Wilmot, he has dedicated a lifetime to refining his craft. His work moves effortlessly between tradition and innovation, portraying scenes of everyday life, ritual, and memory through a deeply personal visual language.

The Process

Barro bruñido

Inherited by Master Artisan Ángel Ortiz and serving as inspiration for this edition, barro bruñido is a traditional ceramic technique from Tonalá, Jalisco. Its distinctive luster is achieved by polishing the surface with pyrite before firing. Characterized by earthy and blue tones, its decoration often depicts flora, fauna, and folkloric figures, reflecting Tonalá’s rich visual heritage.
